چکیده

Introduction: Taxonomic classification of asteroids based on their visible / near-ir spectra or multi band photometry has proven to be a useful tool to infer other properties about asteroids. Meteorite analogs have been identified for several taxonomic classes, permitting detailed inference about asteroid composition [1], [2]. Trends have been identified between taxonomy and measured asteroid density [3]. Thanks to NEOWise and Spitzer, approximately twice as many asteroids have measured albedos than the number with taxonomic classifications. (If one only considers spectroscopically determined classifications, the ratio is > 40.) We present a bayesian framework that provides probabilistic estimates of the taxonomic class of an asteroid based on its albedo. Although probabilistic estimates of taxonomic classes are not a replacement for spectroscopic or photometric determinations, they can be a useful tool for identifying objects for further study or for asteroid threat assessment models [4].

Planetary Satellites, Asteroids, Comets and Meteors

Asteroids, mainly rocky or metallic bodies in the inner solar system, orbit the Sun in various distinct populations (planet-crossers, main-belt asteroids, trans-Neptunian Edgeworth-Kuiper belt objects, Centaurs in the outer planetary region) between which there are transfers over substantial timescales. For example the main belt is the main reservoir replenishing the Earth-crossing asteroids, t...

Inelastic Dissipation in Wobbling Asteroids and Comets

Asteroids and comets dissipate energy when they rotate about any axis different from the axis of the maximal moment of inertia. We show that the most efficient internal relaxation happens at twice the frequency of the body’s precession. Therefore earlier estimates that ignore the double frequency input underestimate the internal relaxation in asteroids and comets. We suggest that the Earth’s se...

Thermal Processing of Silicate Dust in the Solar Nebula: Clues from Primitive Chondrite Matrices

The most abundant matrix minerals in chondritic meteorites—hydrated phyllosilicates and ferrous olivine crystals—formed predominantly in asteroids during fluid-assisted metamorphism. We infer that they formed from minerals present in three less altered carbonaceous chondrites that have silicate matrices composed largely of micrometerand nanometer-sized grains of crystalline forsterite Mg2SiO4 a...

Search for Activity in 3200 Phaethon

We present deep optical imaging of Geminid meteor stream parent 3200 Phaethon taken in search of low-level cometary activity (i.e., coma or dust trail). Although no unambiguous cometary behavior was observed, we find an upper limit on the object’s cometary mass-loss rate of Ṁlim 0:01 kg s . The corresponding active fraction (the fraction of the surface area that could consist of freely sublimat...
